How can biomaterials make us rethink what counts as raw material?
By experimenting with algae binders and organic matter, you can create textures, colors, and structural behaviors that synthetic materials can't replicate, since every form shifts slightly depending on what you feed it. You'll leave with your own experimental piece and a technique you can keep using.
We'll start with a short introduction to biomaterials, covering how they sit at the intersection of material science, art, and ecology. Then we'll cast, mold, and shape pieces using an algae-based binder combined with organic matter usually thrown away: coffee grounds, eggshells, nutshells, and natural dyes.
No prior experience with biomaterials needed.
Everything needed for the workshop will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own organic materials if they'd like to incorporate something personal into their piece, optional, not required.

Valeria Solari is a multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin, working with algae, microorganisms, and organic matter to develop biomaterials through analog and technological processes. Her practice sits at the intersection of material research, ecology, and philosophy, exploring growth, transformation, and decay, and the porous boundaries between bodies and their environments.
