Concrete is a central element of Susanne Piotter’s (b. 1969, Düsseldorf, Germany) artistic practice – as a material, a carrier of meaning, and a means of formal expression. Few materials have shaped our built environment as extensively while taking on such diverse forms – from anonymous high-rise housing estates and utilitarian structures to innovative exposed-concrete buildings and contemporary design objects.

Once associated with innovation, affordable housing, and new possibilities in design, concrete also stands for failed projects, construction ruins, and bunkers that shape the urban landscape.

This ambivalence forms the starting point of Piotter’s artistic practice.
